SCNA Honors These Local Naturist Pioneers

Over the years SCNA has been graced with members and other friends who have been special to us. We dedicate this section of the web site to honor the lives of these special people, and to give voice to their stories and achievements. a place to be told. New names are periodically added to this list by vote of the SCNA Board of Directors.


SCNA Hall of Fame

This is a Lifetime Achievement Award given to individual members, non-members, or community activists whose contributions to SCNA and to the Naturist Movement in Southern California, who best exemplify the volunteer spirit and mission statement of this organization, or by leading or mentoring others in a way that exemplifies the naturist philosophy. This award is not given every year.

 
ANKH Award Recipients

The ANKH AWARD is reserved for an individual who, during the previous year, is seen to have gone “above and beyond” to exemplify the mission and vision of SCNA not only within the club, but also through outreach to the non-nudist public-at-large. The award is not given every year.

Matt Bullock (1920-) A distinguished Black American jurist has been a nudist lifestyle advocate for nearly 70 years. He broke the color barrier at several East Coast nudist parks during the 1950's and 1960's.

Irene Shannon (1922 - ) A lifelong nudist and naturist advocate, Irene made a unique contribution at a critical time in the 1970‘s and 80’s when local activists were attempting to create legal nude beaches along the California coastline. Over the course of her life she formed several non-landed clubs in Southern California and helped Lee Baxandall organize The Naturist Society along the West Coast.

Robin Martin (1927-2007). First introduced to social nudism in 1962, Robin was a member of and/or participated in every important beach or legislative fight for the remaining 35 years of his life. He was a founding member of the Glen Eden Sun Club, Elysium Fields, The Naturist Society, and SCNA. His boxes of personal papers, journals, and photos are at the Western Nudist Library in Corona.

Erwin G. "Ed" Lange (1920-1995) An international nudist movement pioneer, active in AANR, The Naturist Society, and the International Naturist Federation, Lange founded Elysium Fields outside Los Angeles and guided it for nearly 30 years through the most expensive and acrimonious zoning battle in Los Angeles history.

Noel Lesley Pugh (1928-2010) An immigrant from Bristol, England, Noel was a world-class artist, caricaturist, and humanitarian. A 25-yr resident of Elysium Fields, his murals grace the walls of many public buildings as well as the walls of many naturist resorts.

W. "Mitch" Mitchell (1926-2006) Like Noel, “Mitch” lived at Elysium Fields for over 30 years and was a pioneer in deep tissue massage therapy. Active in the Free Beach Movement of the 1970's, he was also a magnificent cook (which he learned in the Navy while helping break discrimination barriers in the service.

Gary Mussell (1948- ) Founding President of the Southern California Naturist Society (SCNA), Gary also served as a Board member of Elysium Fields in Topanga Canyon, CA. A tireless volunteer for naturist causes, he also is active in the beach movement in Santa Barbara county.

Art Melworm (1943- ) For his many contributions throughout the first four years as Activities Chair, as Education Chair, and as a member of the Board of Directors for the Southern California Naturist Association. He continues to serve as a local representative for the nationwide Naturist Action Committee.

2005

Lupton "Tony" Wilkinson
Presented this award for his work as the founding Vice President, including helping get SCNA incorporated and setting up the necessary financial infrastructure so the club could start out on a firm financial footing.



2006

Sonya Robinson
Awarded for her many contributions as Chair of the SCNA Activities Committee and her continued – and tireless – support for the Nude Beach Alliance efforts in Santa Barbara County during the previous year. A well-deserved award for our "beach mom!"



2008

Marc Welter
Given in appreciation for Marc's 25-year contribution to the Free Beach Movement as "Mayor" of Bates Beach in Santa Barbara County, and also for your many years of volunteer service to SCNA as both Treasurer and Vice President.



2009

Peter Connolly
In recognition and appreciation of your many contributions to the naturist movement in Southern California, and also for your many years of service to the Southern California Naturist Association including hosting parties and leading naturist excursions to the Santa Barbara Channel Islands on your sailboat.



2010

C. Walter "Walt" Stephens
In recognition and appreciation of his many contributions to the naturist movement in Southern California, and also for his support for the Southern California Naturist Association as a national Trustee for the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR.)
