Holcomb Creek Tower Hike w/NitOC & Camping Bares

Date
09/20/2026 09:30 am - 04:00 pm

Description

Location: Fawnskin, CA

Driving north on the historic Coxey Truck Trail past Hanna Flat Campground, you turn a corner overlooking the canyon of Holcomb Creek and there it is, a monzogranite pinnacle topped with pine trees. This is the Holcomb Creek Tower. While the Pacific Crest Trail runs past the base of the tower, we’ll be taking a trailless route along the crest of the ridge leading to the tower from the northeast, a 3.7-mile cross country route with 320 feet of climb. It’s an easy ramble with some bushwacking and boulder climbing. The hike will also visit Ironwood Group Camp to see if others might want to camp there someday.

Directions:
Take CA-210 to CA-330 to Running Springs. Head straight under the bridge to merge with CA-18. Follow CA-18 to Big Bear Dam and turn left onto CA-38 towards Fawnskin. In 2.9 miles, turn right into the Grout Bay Picnic Area.
We will leave promptly at 10:00 am. From the Grout Bay Picnic Area, we will drive 6.6 miles up the rough unpaved Coxey Truck Trail to the trailhead near Ironwood Group Camp.
