Location: Cleveland National Forest
This trail is a 4.8-mile loop with 583 feet of elevation gain with varied scenery and vegetation. Pine Mountain Trail begins across Sunrise Highway from the Pioneer Mail Picnic Area. After descending past the access gate, the trail briefly continues along the fence line and highway before climbing south up Pine Mountain through low chaparral. At about 1 mile it crosses a dirt road and at 2.5 miles it intersects the Indian Creek Trail at Champagne Pass. After visiting a scenic overlook, we take Indian Creek Trail down to an old jeep trail and return to the trailhead through a lovely meadow. There is no shade, so bring plenty of water and sunscreen along. While the location is in the seldom-visited northwest corner of the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area, there is still the remote possibility of meeting textile hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikes.
Directions: Take I-8 to the Sunrise Highway (County Route S1). Head north on Sunrise Highway 16 miles to the Pioneer Mail Picnic Area, just past mile marker 29 – it will be on the right. Park at the picnic area and remember to post your Adventure Pass. We start hiking at 10am, so get there early. For questions contact Scott at This email address is being protected from spambots.
