SCNA MONTHLY MEET-UPS

Each month, SCNA hosts a monthly (clothed) dinner and discussion group at different public restaurants around the greater Los Angeles area. This is a way to introduce new people to naturism and to dispel mistaken impressions that non-nudists may have about us. This meeting is also a required pre-requisite before we can invite you to one of our clothing-optional parties. Anyone with a sincere interest in discussing naturist issues is welcome. This month's Meet-Ups:

San Fernando Valley: Tuesday Aug 13, 6:45PM – 8:30 PM
Ventura/Santa Barbara: Friday Aug 9, 6:45PM to 8:30PM
Pasadena/Glendale: Monday Aug 19, 6:45PM to 8:30PM
Carpinteria: Tuesday Aug 20, 6:45PM - 8:30PM
South Bay/Torrance: Thursday Aug 29, 6:45PM to 8:30PM

Saturday, August 17, NOON - 6 PM
BATES BEACH PARTY
LOCATION: SANTA BARBARA/VENTURA COUNTY LINE

We had a successful party here in July - no hassles! - so let's do it again!

For the past 10 years, the more-remote northern half of this beach is the best kept secret in the south county. We want to bring back the clothing-optional fun that used to be common there. If you agree, come on down to Bates and show your support!

Bring your own picnic supplies, chairs, bathing suits and sunscreen and make a day of it.

Although we are working with the county to change its nudity ordinance, that law is still in effect at this beach at this time. Wear less than a bathing suit at your own risk. Most of us will wear the minimum required, which means the skimpiest bathing suit you have. Some women tell me they will wear pasties on their nipples or even band-aids, as they did at the Venice Beach Top-free protest last summer. The further down the beach you sit, the lower the risk of a ticket.

Call us at (818) 225-2273 or RSVP to scna@socalnaturist.org.

Directions to DeAnza Springs
August 8-11, 2013
AANR-WEST ANNUAL CONVENTION &
August 12-18, 2013
AANR NATIONAL CONVENTION
Location: De Anza Springs Nudist Resort
Jacumba, California (1 Hour East of San Diego)

The first four days are the annual gathering of West Coast AANR club delegates (mostly representing the parks and resorts). SCNA delegates will elect a new slate of officers and half of the members of the Board of Directors this year. This Board oversees the various committees (Marketing, Government Affairs, etc) that keep us free to celebrate our nudist lifestyle! Give us a call by July 15 if you are interested in attending as a voting delegate from SCNA.

The following 7 days are devited to the annual National Convention of nudists from all over the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico who belong to the American Association for Nude Recreation. Here there will be meetings and workshops devoted to the Nudist Movement where ideas will be shared and many important decisions will be made.

De Anza is located about an hour's drive east of San Diego, with a nice restaurant. Campgrounds and RV hookups still available but running out, so hurry and call DeAnza at (619) 766-4301 to reserve your spot! SCNA also has reserved a block of room offsite at a nearby hotel. Call us if you want one before they also are filled.

We also encourage those of you who will be attending either of these conventions to open your cars and SUVs to car-pooling (if just to split the gas money!) It’s also a great way to pass the time while traveling to the event. If you want to join this unofficial “ride share” let us know at the SCNA message center: (818) 225-2273.

Directions to Lupin Lodge
Thursday, August 15 to Sunday August 18
THE NATURIST SOCIETY’S
ANNUAL WESTERN GATHERING

LUPIN LODGE, LOS GATOS CA

Unfortunately the dates of the national AANR meeting (see above) overlap with the Naturist Society Gathering at Lupin Lodge, near San Jose. The two locations are about 10 hours driving time apart, so it is not possible to attend both. Some SCNA members are committed to workshops at the Gathering and so will not be attending the AANR convention.

The Western Gathering are full of interesting workshops being sponsored by individual clubs and naturist leaders from all over the Western United States. Anyone who has gone to a Gathering before knows it is a great time to see old friends from other nudist groups (and to make new friends!) and to share experiences and advice all can use to make their clubs and beaches better.

The Lupin Lodge resort itself is just great with over 100 acres of land with plenty of hiking trails, tennis courts, volleyball, two pools, two Jacuzzis, a computer recreation hall, an magnificent restaurant! The number of available "yurt" overnight rooms is just about sold out, but there is plenty of RV hookups and camping spots available. Call them at (408) 353-9200 to reserve your overnight accommodations. There are also several motels outside the resort within just a few miles.

Those of you who will be attending to open your cars and SUVs to car-pooling (if just to split the gas money!) It’s also a great way to pass the time while traveling to the event. If you want to join this unofficial “ride share” let us know at the SCNA message center: (818) 225-2273.

Zorthian was also known for throwing a lavish Bacchus Festival each year on his birthday, complete with naked nymphs feeding him grapes. (Sorry to disappoint, but you will have to bring your own nymphs and grapes this time!)

This event is sold out as of 8/22/2013.

Saturday, August 24, Noon – 6:00 PM
ZORTHIAN RANCH POOL PARTY
$ 20.00/PERSON

The famous Zorthian Ranch is a 48-acre mountainside retreat in the hills above Altadena and Pasadena, which has been used for fashion shoots, movie locations, and has been the site of the annual LA Folk Festival for the last 3 years. It was designed and built by the late Jirayr Zorthian (1911-2004), who was considered a significant artist of the 20th century and whose paintings and sculptures adorn federal buildings, from the Pentagon to Post Offices around the country. The ranch displays many of his works, and it has a large swimming pool, a conference center, and theatrical stage.

We have rented out the entire property for the afternoon, so to cover our costs we are opening up the party to the Olympians, YNA, Camping Bares, and NitOC clubs to enjoy the day with us.

SCNA will provide hamburgers & hot dogs and a salad, plus soda and water. Please bring a side dish to share.

This will be a unique experience for SCNA members to enjoy! For more information about the Ranch, see their web site at: www.zorthianranch.com

Important! We need the full name of any NON-SCNA member at least 36 hours in advance in order to verify membership with the other clubs and/or to check them through the Megan's Law and FBI sexual predator databases. NON-SCNA members will also be required to secure their RSVP's with payment via PayPal, check, or Money Order, 36 hours prior to the event.

PLEASE RSVP to SCNA at (818) 225-2273 or via email to scna@socalnaturist.org. Specific directions will be sent to those who RSVP about five days before the event.

SUNDAY AUGUST 25, 2 PM
NATIONAL GO-TOPLESS DAY
LOCATION: VENICE BEACH

This is not an SCNA event, it is organized by www.gotopless.org. There are about a dozen similar events planned in cities across the country, including San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Denver, Miami Beach and Seattle.

Last year, the LA Times reported more than 200 people, including about two dozen topless women, marched on the Venice Beach boardwalk protesting California state law that bar women from going bare-chested in public. Participants obtained a permit in advance and agreed to obey the law by covering their nipples with red tape, Band-Aids and other makeshift pasties. Los Angeles police hovered at the periphery as the group marched nearly a mile from Navy Court to Windward Avenue, but did not arrest anyone for indecent exposure.

About 50 men strapped on red bikinis supplied by organizers to show their solidarity.

No need to RSVP to SCNA, just show up to show up and show your support!
